My daughter was hospitalized twice at Dominion, and she was also treated in their partial hospital program. They saved her life. I am a mental health professional, and I have worked in many inpatient settings, and this was the best psychiatric hospital for children that I have ever seen. Ask to be treated by Dr. Spivack or Dr. Harper, even though their group charges separately. I was shocked by some of the negative reviews. Please do not reject this hospital based on the reviews. You would be missing out on a great treatment option for your child.
This place is a nightmare. They had me sign paperwork and then took me upstairs to get a tour of the eating disorder wing. Right when we walked in, they had a very young girl sitting at the nursing counter and she just stared up at us with the most miserable look on her face (I know this place isn't meant to be super fun but this poor girl looked like she had given up). The eating disorder wing itself is super tiny, with about 4 rooms that the patients are to frequent. The "assessment room" where they take your vitals is literally a converted broom closet. The entire wing is very dark and depressing. Now I could deal with all of this if I thought they had a good program, but it is too flawed. My biggest problems were as follows: the place was dirty. They claimed that they have people come in and clean "every day", but it looked like no one had bothered to clean it in years. The furniture was covered in dirt, and the place looked very rundown. The second major issue was that they had minors in with adults. Before I even came to the facility I was told I would only be with other adults. How in the world is it appropriate or conducive to anyone's recovery to have 14 year old kids in the same exact program as adults? When these issues were discussed with the heads of the program, we were told they could not do anything about any of them. Just don't bother coming here. They really don't care about making you comfortable or even following appropriate guidelines that you'd think every program would follow. Pay attention to the bad reviews, because they're spot-on.
The inpatient workers for the Adolescent unit are the nicest bunch you'll meet in quite some time. They're a little bit touchy with how close patients are, which makes sense, but it can be a little exasperating sometimes. Types of therapy are vast, but they're not optional. The food *can* suck, but there's always other options. I'd recommend Dominion for anyone who qualifies for the Adolescent unit. Can't speak for the rest of the units.
My daughter has received very good services from the staff at this hospital. It can be nerve wrecking when your child is receiving services and is away from home, but I feel that the hospital staff from the doctors to the nurses to the administrative staff all work to make my daughter and all patients feel comfortable. The care they provide is therapeutic to the whole family. i would recommend this facility to familes who are seeking mental health care and services.
The pictures lie. The reviews lie. IT. LIES. It didn't help me at all, in fact it made me worse. Please don't send your kids there. I still have nightmares from them sedating me and taking blood when I got angry. When they put me in the safety room I clawed at the walls screaming for someone to help me until my voice was gone. The food made me sick and I lost 25 lbs while I was there. DONT SEND YOUR KID THERE PLEASE!!!!
